Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Hold “International Conference on Hydrogen 2020” in Virtual Format

1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will hold the International Conference on Hydrogen 2020 under the theme “hydrogen in maritime transport and hydrogen mobility” in both online and offline format on October 7.

 

2. At the upcoming conference to be attended in person or virtually by hydrogen experts from the Republic of Korea, the International Energy Agency (IEA), the United States, the People’s Republic of China, Japan, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, the Kingdom of Norway, and the Federal Republic of Germany, the participants will discuss the current state and prospects for hydrogen in international maritime transport and the development of hydrogen mobility, and explore opportunities for Korean companies willing to enter hydrogen markets overseas.

 

o The conference will feature a congratulatory message from member of the National Assembly Lee Nak-yon and a keynote presentation by IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol under the theme “the future of hydrogen: seizing today’s opportunities.”

 

o In Session 1, the participants will share each country’s policies and developments regarding hydrogen in maritime transport, and make presentations and have discussions on the safety and economics of hydrogen export.

 

o In Session 2, the participants will make presentations and have discussions on trends in the development of hydrogen mobility, including hydrogen fuel cell ships, trucks, and air taxis, as well as major pilot projects in the area.

 

3. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs hopes that amid rapidly-growing global hydrogen cooperation, the forthcoming conference will contribute to the ROK’s efforts to lead the mobility market, including hydrogen vehicles, where the ROK is seen to have a competitive edge, and to establish stable hydrogen supply chains through international cooperation.

 

o In his opening remarks, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Lee Taeho will stress the importance of hydrogen in post-COVID-19 economic recovery, and explain that the ROK government is exerting efforts to achieve the goals of economic recovery and energy transition at the same time through the Green New Deal which contains measures to foster the hydrogen industry.
