ROK-Mozambique Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on Occasion of UN General Assembly

1. During her visit to New York for the 74th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang Kyung-wha held a meeting with Foreign Minister José Pacheco of the Republic of Mozambique on Thursday, September 26. The two sides discussed the recent bilateral relations; ways to facilitate economic cooperation between the two countries; and the ROK’s humanitarian assistance to Mozambique affected by flood in early 2019.



2. Minister Kang highlighted that as Mozambique has plentiful natural resources such as natural gas and the ROK has technical expertise and experiences in resource development, mutually beneficial cooperation in the areas of energy and resource is possible. In addition, Minister Kang asked for Mozambique’s cooperation in and support for promoting the ROK enterprises to build their presence in Mozambique in the fields of shipbuilding, energy and ground marine plant industry.



○ During the meeting, Minister Pacheco noted that bilateral relations in the economic sector, including the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) industry, are becoming more robust, and voiced hope that as the two countries share complementary economic structures, they would work closely together in the areas of energy, infrastructure, agriculture and tourism.



○ The two Ministers shared the view on holding the follow-up working-level negotiations as soon as possible in a bid to concretize bilateral cooperation.



3. Minister Kang conveyed her condolences to Mozambique which suffered a massive loss of life and property damage due to a series of cyclones that occurred in March (Idai) and April (Kenneth), 2019. Furthermore, Minister Kang reminded the Mozambique government of the ROK government’s aid in responding to the crises and restoring the damages, and mentioned that as a responsible member of the international community, the ROK government will extend additional assistance for Mozambique’s reconstruction and restoration works, given that restoration activities in the country are extended over a long period of time.



○ Minister Pacheco expressed deep appreciation for the decision made by the ROK government to render additional humanitarian assistance to Mozambique following the two previous aids in March and April this year, respectively, and replied that the two countries would work closely together in necessary fields in the process of restoring Mozambique.


 

4. Following her visits to three countries including the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the Republic of Ghana and the Republic of South Africa in July this year, Minister Kang held the ROK-Mozambique Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on the occasion of the UN General Assembly in line with the ROK government’s efforts to strengthen its diplomacy toward Africa. The meeting is expected to contribute to establishing a mutually beneficial partnership between the ROK and African countries which is being pursued by the ROK government.
