Foreign Minister Meets with Her Canadian Counterpart Freeland

1. Foreign Minister met with her Canadian counterpart Chrystia Freeland on March 29 for the third time this year, and discussed major issues, including developments on the Korean Peninsula, as well as ways to step up cooperation between the Republic of Korea and Canada, which mark the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year.

 

The two Ministers met on the sidelines of the Vancouver Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Security and Stability on the Korean Peninsula (January 16) and the UN Human Rights Council meeting (February 27).

 

2. Minister Kang explained the situation on the Korean Peninsula, including the decision to hold inter-Korean and US-North Korea summits, and expressed appreciation for Canada’s continued support for the ROK government’s policy to establish a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.

 

o Minister Freeland showed a keen interest in the rapidly changing situation on the Korean Peninsula, and said that Canada, which holds the presidency of the G7 this year, will also actively contribute to resolving the North Korean nuclear issue peacefully.

 

G7 (seven major countries): United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Italy, Canada and France

 

- The presidency is held by each of the member countries in turn. Canada holds the presidency this year.

 

3. The two sides took note that the ROK and Canada, which formed strategic partnership, are continuing close communications through robust summit-level exchanges, and agreed to continue to closely work together to protect the global trade order where free trade is upheld.

- (Governor General Payette) summit meeting (February 7) during her visit to the ROK to attend the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games (February 6-12)
