1. The government of the Republic of Korea welcomes the UN General Assembly’s adoption of the “Olympic Truce” resolution, titled “Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal,” on November 13, New York time, by consensus and with the support of the international community, ahead of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

* The UN General Assembly adopts an “Olympic Truce” resolution on a biennial basis in a move to revive the ancient Greek tradition calling for a complete suspension of hostilities during the Olympic Games. In 2017, the ROK, the host of the 2018 Winter Olympics, led the adoption of the resolution.

2. In particular, the expression of the expectation in the resolution that the PyeongChang 2018 will help promote peace on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia reflects the ROK government’s commitment to make the PyeongChang event “Olympics of peace.”

* In the resolution, the UN General Assembly expressed “its expectation that Pyeongchang 2018 will be a meaningful opportunity to foster an atmosphere of peace, development, tolerance and understanding on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia.”

3. The resolution is expected to help further enhance the international community’s interest in and excitement over the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, which has already been growing since the ROK President’s keynote speech at the UN General Assembly session in September and the promotional activities for the PyeongChang event. Going forward, the ROK government will continue strong efforts to make a success of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
