1. The Foreign Ministry, together with the Korea Nuclear Society, will host a “Forum for Enhancing Public Confidence on Nuclear Safety in Northeast Asia” in Seoul on October 25 for discussions on ways for the Republic of Korea, Japan and China to work together to enhance confidence on nuclear safety.

2. At the forum, in view of the need for close cooperation on nuclear safety among countries in Northeast Asia where a quarter of the world’s nuclear reactors are in operation, the participants will discuss the current status of public confidence on nuclear safety and public involvement in the ROK, Japan and China as well as the efforts of such advanced countries in the nuclear sector as Finland and France to enhance public confidence on nuclear safety.

3. The initiative to set up a “Northeast Asian consultative mechanism on nuclear safety,” which was proposed by the ROK government in August 2014, is part of the ROK’s overarching initiative for cooperation in the region, namely “the Northeast Asia Peace and Cooperation Initiative.” As it is essential for all the countries in a region to work together on this cross-border issue of nuclear safety and confidence, the Foreign Ministry will continue to make various efforts to promote cooperation on nuclear safety in Northeast Asia.
