Spokesperson’s Statement on Appointment of New UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

1. The government of the Republic of Korea welcomes the appointment of former President Michelle Bachelet of Chile as new UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

 

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN’s highest/under-secretary-general-level official that oversees human rights affairs and activities of the organization, is appointed by the UN Secretary-General and approved by the UN General Assembly.

 

- Following the nomination of former Chilean President Bachelet as new UN High Commissioner for Human Rights by UN Secretary-General Guterres on August 8, the UN General Assembly approved the appointment on August 10.

 

Incoming UN High Commissioner Bachelet will serve a four-year term from September 1, 2018, through August 31, 2022. Meanwhile, the term of current High Commissioner Zeid al-Hussein will expire on August 31, 2018.

 

2. The government of the Republic of Korea takes note of the fact that incoming High Commissioner Bachelet, through her robust activities as two-term President of Chile and as founding Executive Director of the UN Women, built an extensive insight and experiences in various areas; and expects her to use them to brilliantly perform her mission as High Commissioner for Human Rights.

 

3. The government of the Republic of Korea, as a member state of the UN Human Rights Council, will render strong support to and cooperate with the incoming UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on her activities designed to protect and promote human rights across the world.
