1. The government of the Republic of Korea welcomes the adoption of a resolution on the situation of human rights in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea by consensus for the second consecutive year by the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly at its 72nd session on November 14 (New York time). The resolution was co-sponsored by 61 countries, including the ROK.

2. The ROK government takes note that in this year’s resolution, the UN General Assembly stresses the need to protect the human rights of families separated by the Korean War and detainees, expressing concern over the suspension of reunions for separated families, and urging the DPRK to protect the basic rights of detainees, including consular access, confirm their status, and allow them contact with their families.

3. The resolution also notes the importance of dialogue to improve the human rights and humanitarian situation in the DPRK, and emphasizes the need for the DPRK to continue to cooperate with UN human rights mechanisms, as it did by allowing the Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities to visit the DPRK this year for the first time.

4. The ROK government once again urges the DPRK to immediately take concrete and substantial measures to make tangible improvements in the human rights situation of its people in accordance with the recommendations contained in the UN General Assembly resolution.
