Outcome of ROK-US Consultation Between Chief Negotiators for North Korean Nuclear Issue

1. On June 28, Amb. Lee Do-hoon, Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs, had a bilateral meeting with Mr. Stephen Biegun, Special Representative for North Korea of the United States.

2. Amb. Lee noted the positive environment in light of the recent exchange of letters between the leaders of the US and the DPRK as well as the visit to Pyongyang by President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping. He also explained that the ROK is devoting its best efforts for early resumption of the talks and for strengthening of the momentum of dialogue between the US and the DPRK to make progress in implementing Panmunjom Declaration of April 27, Pyongyang Joint Declaration of September 2018, and the US-DPRK Singapore Joint Statement of June 12.

ㅇ Particularly, Amb. Lee suggested that the two countries continue to work closely so that the upcoming ROK-US summit reaffirms both parties’ commitment to complete denuclearization and the establishment of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula, and further fosters a positive environment to make progress on those objectives.

3. Special Representative Biegun also expressed the US hope that the upcoming ROK-US summit will be an important opportunity for peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula, and reaffirmed that the US remains ready to engage in constructive discussions with the DPRK to make progress simultaneously and in parallel towards the commitments set out by President Trump and Chairman Kim at the Singapore Summit.
