Outcome of ROK-China Foreign Ministers’ Meeting Held on Sidelines of ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ Meetings

1. Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha, who is on a visit to Singapore to attend ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ Meetings, met with China’s State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on August 3, and engaged in in-depth discussions on issues of mutual interest, including the ROK-China relations, and the current situation on the Korean Peninsula.

 

2. Minister Kang and State Councilor Wang reviewed the progress in implementing measures to follow up on President Moon Jae-in’s state visit to China late last year, and took note that the ROK-China relations were developing in a stable manner amid robust high-level exchanges. The two sides also agreed to continue to work together to accomplish more achievements from cooperation in areas directly related to the lives of the people, including economy and environment.

 

o The two sides especially shared the view that building trust through close communications between the leaders of the two countries would be a key engine facilitating the development of bilateral relations, and agreed to continue close communications at the highest level, making use of a number of multilateral meetings to be held in the second half of the year.

 

o They also agreed to continue to work to facilitate exchanges and cooperation between the leaders of the two countries’ parliaments, as well as high-level exchanges between their diplomatic authorities.

 

3. Minister Kang and State Councilor Wang shared their assessments of the latest situation on the Korean Peninsula, and had in-depth discussions on ways the ROK and China can work together.

 

o The two sides said that they were seeing positive changes in the situation on the Korean Peninsula following the inter-Korean and US-North Korea summits, and agreed to continue close communications and cooperation between the ROK and China to facilitate efforts to achieve complete denuclearization, and establish a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.

 

o Minister Kang explained the ROK government’s active efforts to implement the Panmunjeom Declaration, and improve inter-Korean relations, and asked the Chinese side to continue to play a constructive role to achieve complete denuclearization, and establish a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.

 

o State Councilor Wang took note of the ROK’s leading role in making progress in the current situation, expressed full support for the ROK government’s efforts, and said that China would continue to make active efforts to establish peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula in close communication and cooperation with the ROK side.

 

4. The ROK-China Foreign Ministers’ meeting served as a good opportunity to strengthen momentum for substantive and continued development of relations between the two countries, and to facilitate closer communications with China, an important cooperation partner in efforts to achieve complete denuclearization, and to establish a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.
