Press Briefing

Spokesperson and Deputy Minister for Public Affairs Soosuk Lim

October 27, 2022  14:30  KST

Good afternoon. Let me start today’s briefing.

First, let me tell you the Korean government’s position on the situation in Myanmar.

The Korean government expresses deep concern that the airstrikes by Myanmar's military on Kachin State in northeastern Myanmar on October 23 have caused a number of civilian casualties.

The Korean government reiterates its call for the cessation of violence, the release of those who are unjustly detained, the implementation of obligations under ASEAN Five-Point Consensus, and a swift return to democracy.

Next, I will tell you major events to come at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Park Jin will meet with Chairman of the State Great Hural (Parliament) of Mongolia Gombojav Zandanshatar on October 28.

In the upcoming meeting, Foreign Minister Park will exchange views on ways to increase substantive cooperation between the two countries in a wide range of areas, including rare metals and minerals, as well as ways to facilitate people-to-people exchanges; the current situation on the Korean Peninsula; and ways to work together in the international arena.

Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Hyundong will hold the 8th Korea-EU High-Level Political Dialogue (HLPD) with Deputy Secretary-General of the European External Action Service (EEAS) Enrique Mora on October 28.

Korea and the EU, which share core values, including freedom, human rights, and the rule of law, have held HLPDs on a regular basis since 2011.

In the forthcoming dialogue, the two sides will exchange extensive views on the relations between Korea and the EU, which will mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations next year; cooperation in cyber security, maritime security, and counterterrorism; and regional and global issues, including the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
