Good afternoon. Let me start today’s briefing.

The Korean government welcomes the appointment of Minister of Foreign Affairs II of Brunei Darussalam Erywan Yusof as Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar.

The Korean government hopes that the Special Envoy will visit Myanmar as soon as possible with full access to all parties concerned and that the visit will help fully implement the five-point consensus agreed upon at the ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting held in April.

The Korean government strongly supports ASEAN’s constructive role in resolving the situation in Myanmar and will continue to seek ways to contribute in that regard.
 
Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong will attend the Friends of the Mekong Ministerial Meeting to take place later today, Thursday, August 5, in a virtual format.

The Friends of the Mekong Ministerial Meeting is a consultative platform designed to seek ways for cooperation among the five Mekong countries and major donor countries.

At the upcoming Meeting, Foreign Minister Chung will explain the achievements and the future direction of Mekong-ROK cooperation and discuss cooperative measures with participants from the five Mekong countries, the United States, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the European Union, for an inclusive and sustainable development of the Mekong region.
