ROK and China Hold 2nd Official Meeting on Delimitation of Maritime Boundaries

1. The 2nd official meeting on the delimitation of maritime boundaries between the Republic of Korea and the People’s Republic of China took place in Beijing, China, on July 25, 2019, with Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the ROK Lee Tae-ho and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PRC Luo Zhaohui as head delegates of the two countries.

 

° The ROK delegation was composed of officials of relevant government authorities, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The Chinese delegation was comprised of officials from such related government authorities as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy, and the China Coast Guard.

 

2. The two sides reviewed the achievements from the past discussions, including the common understanding between the two countries on the delimitation of maritime boundaries, and exchanged in-depth views on ways to move future negotiations forward and other relevant matters.

 

3. At the 1st official meeting held in 2015, the ROK and China had shared the view that the delimitation of maritime boundaries through friendly negotiations carries significance in terms of the continued advancement of the strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries in that it enables a long-term, stable bilateral relations as well as the further strengthening of maritime cooperation between the two countries.

 

4. During his visit to China, Vice Minister Lee Tae-ho met with Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PRC Le Yucheng on July 24, during which the two sides exchanged views on ways to enhance high-level exchanges and cooperation, issues concerning the Korean Peninsula, and the situation in the region.
