1. The Foreign Ministry, together with the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, will host a Korea-Japan-China Expert Workshop on Nuclear Safety Research Cooperation in Seoul on November 1 and 2.

2. At the workshop consisting of five sessions, fifteen relevant experts from the three countries will deliver presentations on the three countries’ respective research and advances in nuclear safety, followed by a discussion among the paticipants on potential areas for trilateral cooperation.

3. The government of the Republic of Korea, in view of the need for cooperation on nuclear safety among countries in Northeast Asia where a quarter of the world’s nuclear reactors are in operation, has selected nuclear safety as an area for cooperation under its Northeast Asia Peace and Cooperation Initiative and lately been discussing with China and Japan ways to step up cooperation in the field.

° Cooperation on research on nuclear safety is one of the four areas of cooperation under the initiative to set up a “Northeast Asian consultative mechanism on nuclear safety,” which was proposed by the ROK government in August 2014. The forthcoming workshop is expected to help step up trilateral cooperation on the research and thereby pave the way for an early launch of the mechanism.
