Outcomes of Bilateral Meetings on Occasion of 5th Korea-Africa Forum


1. On the occasion of the 5th Korea-Africa Forum, Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong held bilateral meetings respectively with Monique Nsanzabaganwa, the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Aissata Tall Sall, the Foreign Minister of Senegal, and Nancy Tembo, the Foreign Minister of Malawi, on March 3.


° [AU Commission] Minister Chung expressed his satisfaction that the Korea-Africa Forum was successfully held with cooperation of the AU, and requested the AU's interests in further strengthening Korea-Africa relations based on the achievements of the forum.


- The two sides stated that Korea and Africa, as mutually beneficial partners, could mutually contribute greatly to promoting Africa’s industrialization and expanding Korea’s global supply chains, and shared the view that business exchanges between Korea and Africa should be further vitalized through the Korea-Africa Business Forum and other cooperation mechanisms.


° [Senegal] Minister Chung emphasized that Senegal, as the chair country of the AU this year, the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the AU, is an important partner for expanding Korea-Africa cooperation and in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries this year, he also proposed further strengthening substantive cooperation in various fields such as development, economy and the defense industry.


- The two Ministers shared concerns about the recent deterioration of the situation in the Sahel region, and Minister Chung mentioned that Senegal, a model country for democracy in Africa, could play an important role in regional peace and security, and stated that Korea would work together for sustainable peace in Africa.


- The two Ministers signed the Framework Arrangement concerning loans from the Economic Development Cooperation Fund right after the meeting, strengthening the institutional basis for expanding bilateral development cooperation projects.


° [Malawi] Minister Chung appreciated that Korea and Malawi have developed friendly and cooperative relations in various fields such as agriculture and development cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1965, and the two sides decided to continue such cooperation.


- The two Ministers signed the Economic and Technological Cooperation Agreement immediately after the meeting, and agreed to lay the legal foundation for promoting economic cooperation between the two countries, to promote cooperation between governments and companies, to seek joint projects, and to expand people-to-people exchanges.


2. In addition, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Choi Jong Kun met with Omar Al-Ketti, the Undersecretary of International Cooperation and Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Libya, Libyan head of delegation, on the afternoon of March 3. Vice Minister Choi mentioned that Korea, together with the international community, supports the stability and development of Libya, as the stability of Libya is directly related to the stability of the Middle East and North Africa.


3. On the afternoon of March 3, Deputy Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs Ham Sang-wook also had a meeting with Chad's head of delegation, Mahamat Ali Hassan, Chad's Ambassador to the AU. Deputy Minister Ham noted with appreciation that Chad is playing a key role in stabilizing the Sahel region such as by sending its troops to the Mali mission.
