Press Briefing

Spokesperson and Deputy Minister for Public Affairs Soosuk Lim

January 3, 2023  14:30  KST

Good afternoon. Let me start today’s briefing.

Let me tell you the Korean government’s position on the ruling against State Counsellor of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi.

Since the beginning of the Myanmar crisis, the Korean government has consistently called for ending violence, releasing those who are arbitrarily detained, and swiftly restoring democracy in Myanmar. The Korean government expresses grave concern that despite such calls, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced to a total of 33 years in prison in her final trial last Friday.

For a peaceful resolution of the Myanmar crisis as well as the restoration of democracy in Myanmar, the Korean government once again calls for the implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus, including the commencement of constructive dialogue among all parties concerned, and the UN Security Council’s resolution on Myanmar.
