Good afternoon. Let
me start today’s briefing.
Vice Minister of
Foreign Affairs Lee Dohoon will virtually attend the 78th Session of the United
Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) to
be held in a hybrid format in Bangkok, Thailand, from May 23 to 27.
The upcoming UN ESCAP
Session will cover ways to advance sustainable development in Asia and the
Pacific and to promote cooperation in order to overcome crises in the region
including COVID-19 and climate change.
In his remarks on the
afternoon of Monday, May 23, Vice Minister Lee will suggest the way forward for
cooperation in Asia and the Pacific and convey the commitment of the Korean
government to contribute in such areas as COVID-19, climate change and digital
cooperation.
On the sidelines of
the UN ESCAP Session, the Korean government, together with the Vietnamese
government, will host a side event titled “Sharing Ambitions and the Way
Forward: Carbon Neutrality Goals and Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific” on
Tuesday, May 24, to seek ways for cooperation in the region to achieve the goal
of carbon neutrality.
