Press Briefing

Spokesperson and Deputy Minister for Public Affairs Choi Youngsam

March 2, 2021 14:30 KST

Good afternoon. Let me start today’s briefing.

First, the statement of the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the situation in Myanmar has already been released on Sunday, but let me read the statement again here.

The Korean government expresses grave concern at the appalling reports of numerous civilian casualties in Myanmar.

The Korean government condemns use of violence by the military and police forces of Myanmar against civilians who demand democracy, and strongly calls on the authorities to immediately stop such use of force.

The Korean government along with the international community will closely watch the situation in Myanmar and consider measures to take in response to developments in Myanmar.

Meanwhile, there have been no reports of Korean casualties in Myanmar so far.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will do its best to protect Korean nationals and companies in Myanmar, while keeping a close watch on the situation in the country.

Next, Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong will meet with “comfort women” victim Lee Yong-soo at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at 3 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, March 3.

The upcoming meeting is expected to serve as a meaningful opportunity to hear about the “comfort women” victim’s opinions on the “comfort women” issue and to share candid views on the restoration of the honor and dignity of the "comfort women" victims as well as the way forward to resolve the issue.

(A question-and-answer session followed.)
