The Republic of Korea and Japan held the first ROK–Japan Foreign Ministries’ AI working-level meeting on February 5 in Tokyo, represented by Director Shin Dong-min of the International Artificial Intelligence Diplomacy Division and Director Akira Kadomoto of the Economic Diplomacy Strategy Division. The meeting was held based on the discussions at the 14th ROK–Japan Joint Committee on Science and Technology Cooperation in November 2025, following the outcome of the ROK-Japan Summit in September 2025.
The two sides have continued to share the view that cooperation in emerging technologies, including AI, should be further strengthened. The meeting was convened to translate this shared recognition into practical cooperation.
The two sides exchanged views on national AI policies, cooperation on global AI governance in multilateral fora including the UN, OECD, G20/G7, Hiroshima AI Process and APEC, and ways to promote practical cooperation, including in the area of Physical AI. The two sides concurred to regularly hold such meetings to further advance cooperation in both bilateral and multilateral levels.
