- Enhancing ROK-NATO Cooperation and Coordination on Major Security Issues -
On Thursday, December 4, Ambassador Jeong Yeondoo, newly appointed Vice Minister for Strategy and Intelligence, met with a delegation from the NATO Parliamentary Assembly during its visit to the ROK. The two sides exchanged views on ROK-NATO cooperation, the strategic environment in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region, and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
* The NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA) is an inter-parliamentary body composed of parliamentarians from the NATO Allies, established to promote mutual understanding among the Allies by acting as a link between NATO and the parliaments of those countries.
- The Sub-Committee on Technology Trends and Security is a specialized subcommittee under the Science and Technology Committee (STC) of the NATO PA, which analyzes the impact of science and technology on security and develops policy recommendations
Ambassador Jeong welcomed the visit to the ROK by the NATO PA delegation and noted that the active exchanges between the National Assembly of the ROK and the NATO PA since 2008 have contributed to the development of ROK-NATO relations. He explained that, amid the multi-dimensional global polycrisis, the ROK has been strengthening cooperation with NATO, its key security partner, across a wide range of areas including cybersecurity, advanced technologies, and information sharing. On that note, he called for further expanding the horizon of bilateral cooperation, including in the defense industry. He also shared the ROK government’s efforts to ease tensions and build peace on the Korean Peninsula and requested attention and support of the NATO PA in this regard.
The NATO PA delegation expressed keen interest in defense industry cooperation with the ROK, a powerhouse in the sector, adding that the NATO PA would play a necessary role to ensure tangible outcomes from ROK-NATO cooperation.
