Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Hyun attended the 2nd G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting of 2025, held on Thursday, September 25, at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Chamber of the United Nations headquarters. The meeting brought together approximately 90 participants, including foreign ministers from 21 G20 members and invited countries as well as representatives of other UN Member States and international organizations, and covered the theme of “Sustainable Economic Development through Peace.”
Minister Cho highlighted that, as President of the UN Security Council for September, the Republic of Korea is actively contributing to the maintenance of international peace and security. He also noted the government’s continued efforts to restore trust and peace in inter-Korean relations. The Minister underscored the importance of enhancing aid effectiveness and leveraging AI and technological innovation as tools for promoting peace, all for the peace-development-shared prosperity nexus. In addition, he stated that Korea is preparing to present a regional AI vision at the 2025 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Gyeongju at the end of October this year.
The G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting has been held twice this year as it did last year. In particular, the second meeting is taking place during the UN General Assembly High-Level Week, serving as an opportunity for both G20 members and non-members to discuss key political and economic issues. The Korean government will continue to actively participate in major international economic fora, including the 2025 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Gyeongju (October 31–November 1) and the 2025 G20 Summit in Johannesburg (November 22–23).
