1. Director–General for African and Middle Eastern Affairs Chung Kwang-yong and Assistant Foreign Minister and Director-General for Asia and the Pacific of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ali Asghar Mohammadi held the 7th ROK-Iran Director-General Policy Consultation in Seoul on Thursday, May 29.
※ The 6th ROK-Iran Director-General Policy Consultation took place in Tehran in April, 2018.
※ Assistant Foreign Minister and Director-General Mohammadi’s visit to Korea followed his visit to Japan for the 15th Iran-Japan Director-General Consultation on May 27.
2. During the Consultation, the two sides appreciated that the friendly relations between the two countries have been further developing since the resolution of the issue of the frozen Iranian assets in Korea in 2023, which had long been one of the biggest bilateral issues. The two sides also exchanged views on their bilateral relations, people-to-people, cultural and academic exchanges, cooperation on the global stage, and the recent regional developments.
3. Director-General Chung noted the ongoing talks between Iran and the United States on the Iranian nuclear issue and expressed his hope for its peaceful resolution.
4. Prior to the Consultation, Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Chung Byung-won met with Assistant Foreign Minister and Director-General Mohammadi on Wednesday, May 28. Deputy Foreign Minister Chung expressed his expectation that the positive momentum created by last year’s high-level exchanges* between the two countries would be maintained and further developed.
