- An Institutional Framework for the Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy and Mutually Beneficial Cooperation Established-
1. On March 21, 2025, the signing ceremony for the “Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Korea and the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand on Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy” was held.
2. Park Yong-min, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Thailand, signed the agreement, hereafter referred to as the “Korea-Thailand Nuclear Cooperation Agreement”, with Supamas Isarabhakdi, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation of the Kingdom of Thailand, in Bangkok. Thailand has now became the 30th country with which Korea has establishd a nuclear cooperation agreement.
※ Korea has signed a nuclear cooperation agreement with the United States, Canada, Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, China, Argentina, Vietnam, Türkiye, Russia, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Egypt, Chile, Romania, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Jordan, the UAE, South Africa, Japan, India, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Hungary, Finland and Thailand (30 countries).
3. Korea and Thailand, as member states of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and signatories to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), concluded the agreement with the aim to prioritize nuclear safety and environmental protection and to promote social and economic development through the peaceful use of nuclear technology.
4. Under this agreement, Korea and Thailand will enhance cooperation in various fields, including ▴nuclear research and technology development, ▴the construction and operation of nuclear power plants and research reactors, ▴the application of radioactive isotopes in industry, agriculture, and medical service, ▴the management of radioactive waste and nuclear safety, and ▴the development of human resources and public awareness programs.
5. To ensure practical implementation, the two countries plan to establish a joint committee, which will facilitate technological exchanges, joint research, expert training, and the transfer of equipment and technology.
6. The “Korea-Thailand Nuclear Cooperation Agreement” is expected to facilitate a mutually beneficial partnership between the two countries by serving as an institutional foundation for cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Based on this agreement, Korea, drawing from its advanced nuclear technology and expertise, aims to support Thailand’s nuclear infrastructure development, while Thailand will endeavor to foster development in its industrial and scientific sectors by expanding the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
