Ambassador and Deputy Minister for Climate Change Visits Algeria

1. Ambassador and Deputy Minister for Climate Change Hyoeun Jenny Kim visited Algeria from April 15 to 17 and met with Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad Lounes Magramane; Minister of Environment and Renewable Energy Fazia Dahlab; and President of the National Economic, Social and Environmental Council Rabea Kharfi. In the meetings, the two sides discussed the 2024 Korea-Africa Summit and Korea-Algeria issues.


2. During the meeting with Secretary General Magramane on April 17, Ambassador Kim explained that the Korean government will hold the first-ever Korea-Africa Summit from June 4 to 5 with a view to building mutually beneficial and long-term partnerships with African countries, and requested the valuable participation and interest of Algeria to ensure the success of the summit.


o Secretary General Magramane appreciated the close ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries, expressed expectation that the bilateral cooperation would be strengthened through the Korea-Africa Summit, and stressed the need to work together for the success of the Summit.


3. On April 16, Ambassador Kim met with Minister of Environment and Renewable Energy Fazia Dahlab, and President of the National Economic, Social and Environmental Council Rabea Kharfi, and emphasized the necessity of the collective efforts of the global community to address the climate crisis, which threatens the survival and prosperity of humanity.


o Ambassador Kim requested the Algerian government’s attention and support to ensure smooth implementation of mutually beneficial environmental projects between the two countries, such as the greenhouse gas reduction project in Hamici and Algeria’s air quality monitoring project.


o Minister Dahlab and President Kharfi echoed the need to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in tackling climate change and expressed gratitude for Korea's contributions to improving Algeria's air quality. Additionally, they agreed to collaborate to facilitate the successful implementation of ongoing cooperative projects between the two countries.


4. Ambassador Kim’s visit to Algeria served as a significant opportunity to reaffirm the long-standing ties of friendship and cooperation with Algeria, the only country in Africa that has a ‘Strategic Partnership’ with Korea, and to explore ways to boost their substantive cooperation in the future. The visit is also seen to have contributed to enhancing Algeria’s interest and engagement in the Korea-Africa Summit.
