Outcome of Korea-China Deputy Director-Generals’ Meeting on Maritime Affairs

1. A Korea-China Deputy Director-Generals’ Meeting on Maritime Affairs was held on December 6 in Shanghai, China, co-chaired by Kang Young-Shin, Deputy Director-General for Northeast Asian Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, and Yang Renhuo, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China.


2. At this meeting, the two sides exchanged a wide range of views on issues concerning ways to promote substantive cooperation in various fields and discussed maritime issues.


3. Especially, the two sides concurred that it is important for the relationship between the two countries to stably manage the maritime order based on mutual respect for legitimate maritime rights and interests, mutual benefits and common interests, and compliance with international law.


4. In addition, the two sides agreed to continue to expand mutual exchanges and cooperation for the promotion of substantive cooperation in various maritime fields, including marine environment, science and technology, fishing, and safety in search and rescue operations.


5. The two sides agreed to hold the 3rd meeting of the Korea-China Dialogue on Maritime Cooperation in Korea early next year.


※  The Korea-China Dialogue on Maritime Cooperation is a director-general-level dialogue channel through which to comprehensively coordinate and consult on overall maritime issues between Korea and China. It has been held twice on April 14, 2021, and on June 16, 2022, respectively.
