Outcome of Korea-EU Foreign Ministers’ Meeting Held on Occasion of ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ Meetings

1. Minister of Foreign Affairs Park Jin, who is on a visit to Jakarta, Indonesia, to attend the ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ Meetings, met with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell on July 13 at 17:30-18:00 (local time), and discussed issues of common interest, including the Korea-EU relations, the Korean Peninsula, and the situation in Ukraine.


2. High Representative Borrell appreciated that Korea, which was devastated by war, achieved the most successful social and economic growth in a short period of time in the 1960s, and stressed that Korea is now one of the EU's most important partners.


3. Foreign Minister Park took note that this year, which marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and the EU, the two sides have been closely communicating by holding a summit meeting (May 22, Seoul) and a foreign ministers' meeting. They expressed satisfaction with the active implementation of follow-up measures to the summit in areas such as advanced technology, and agreed to make every effort to implement follow-up measures in other areas, including supply chain stability and maritime security. They also agreed to hold the first strategic dialogue between foreign ministers at an early date to make concrete progress on the security partnership agreed upon during the summit.

Foreign Minister Park and High Representative Borrell strongly condemned North Korea for posing a grave threat to international peace and stability through a series of missile provocations, including the launch of a long-range ballistic missile yesterday (July 12). Foreign Minister Park expressed appreciation for the EU's consistent support for Korea’s position on North Korean nuclear and other issues, and High Representative Borrell reaffirmed the EU's support for the Audacious Initiative. Foreign Minister Park also explained the efforts of the Korean government to further raise the international community’s awareness of the human rights situation in North Korea, and the two sides agreed to closely cooperate to improve the human rights situation in North Korea.


5. High Representative Borrell expressed gratitude to Korea for expanding support for Ukraine amid the prolonged war in Ukraine, and the two sides agreed to continue to participate actively in international efforts to end the war in Ukraine and restore peace.
