1. The Government of the Republic of Korea announced on July 26 a joint statement issued by the ROK Foreign Minister together with the Foreign Ministers of Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States, and the High Representative on behalf of the European Union on the execution of pro-democracy and opposition activists in Myanmar.

   * A Myanmar state media outlet reported on July 25 that four people had been executed, including Phyo Zeya Thaw (Maung Kyaw), a former lawmaker of the National League for Democracy; Kyaw Min Yu (Ko Jimmy), a famous pro-democracy activist; and Hla Myo Aung and Aung Thura Zaw.

2. The Joint Statement expresses serious opposition and grave concern of the international community to the Myanmar military intending to step up its oppression of pro-democracy and opposition activists in such an extreme way as execution. The Statement also underlines that the international community is closely watching the situation in Myanmar, and reiterates the importance of putting an end to violence, releasing those who are unjustly detained and restoring democracy. The main content of the Statement is as follows.

ㅇ The Myanmar military regime’s executions of pro-democracy and opposition leaders are reprehensible acts of violence that further exemplify the regime’s disregard for human rights and the rule of law.

ㅇ We urge the regime to release all those unjustly detained, grant full and independent access to prisons and fulfill its obligations under the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)'s Five-Point Consensus*.

    * ① immediate cessation of violence in Myanmar ②  commencement of constructive dialogue among all parties concerned ③ facilitation of mediation by a special envoy of the ASEAN Chair ④ provision of humanitarian assistance by ASEAN ⑤ visit by the ASEAN Chair’s special envoy and delegation to Myanmar to meet with all parties concerned

ㅇ We support the people of Myanmar in their aspirations for freedom and democracy and call on the regime to end the use of violence, respect the will of the people, and restore the country’s path toward democracy.

ㅇ Our thoughts and condolences are with the bereaved families. We also remember and mourn all lives lost in Myanmar in the aftermath of the coup.
