Outcome of Korea-Egypt Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New York

1.  During his visit to New York for the High-Level Meetings of the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly, Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong had a meeting with Foreign Minister of Egypt Sameh Shoukry on the afternoon of September 23 and broadly discussed the bilateral relationship, substantive cooperation and the situation on the Korean Peninsula, among others. 


2.  The two Foreign Ministers agreed that continuing mutual visits and communication at the high level even under the COVID-19 pandemic is important, and also agreed to continue expanding this momentum including at the top level.

3.  The two sides shared the view that they need to expedite the conclusion of a Korea-Egypt free trade agreement (FTA) after they conclude a memorandum of understanding on a mutual feasibility study on the Korea-Egypt FTA as soon as possible.

-  Foreign Minister Chung requested special attention of the Egyptian government to the Korean companies in Egypt and its cooperation for smooth progress of the transportation infrastructure projects joined by Korean companies.


4.  Foreign Minister Chung highlighted the recent designation of Egypt as one of Korea’s ODA priority partner countries for the period of 2021-2025 as one of the most important achievements in the area of international development cooperation and asked for the support of the Egyptian government for the success of the modernization project for the railway system linking Luxor and the High Dam.

-  The two Foreign Ministers agreed to reinforce  cooperation in the area of health care with a view to working more swiftly and closely with each other in the fight against COVID-19.

5.  Foreign Minister Chung invited Foreign Minister Shoukry to the 2021 UN Peacekeeping Ministerial (December 7-8, Seoul) and the 5th Korea-Africa Forum* (December 9-10, Seoul).


*  In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Korea-Africa cooperation, the 5th Korea-Africa Forum will be convened under the theme of “ways to reinforce Korea-Africa cooperation in the post-COVID-19 era.”
