Amb. Noh Kyu-duk, Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs, Visits Japan

1. Amb. Noh Kyu-duk, Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs, visited Japan from September 12 to 14 and held consultations with Mr. Funakoshi Takehiro, Director-General of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and Amb. Sung Kim, U.S. Special Representative for the DPRK. He also met Mr. Mori Takeo, Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

2. Through a series of bilateral and trilateral consultations, the three interlocutors recognized the necessity of stably managing the current situation, in light of recent developments on the Korean Peninsula. They also held in-depth discussions on how they can work together to put the peace process on the Korean Peninsula swiftly back on track, and shared the view that diplomacy and dialogue is an urgent priority in order to achieve complete denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula.

ㅇ In particular, the ROK and the U.S. had extensive consultations on wide-ranging efforts to engage the DPRK, including ROK-U.S. joint humanitarian cooperation and confidence-building measures with the DPRK.

 

3. The ROK, U.S. and Japanese chief negotiators for the North Korean nuclear issue resolved to maintain close cooperation for an early resumption of dialogue with the DPRK to make substantive progress toward complete denuclearization and permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.
