Appointment Ceremony Held for Korean Members of Committee for Future-Oriented Development of Korea-China Relations

1. The appointment ceremony for the Korean members of the Committee for Future-Oriented Development of Korea-China Relations was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the afternoon of August 20, chaired by Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong.


° At the ceremony, 18 Committee members were appointed, including Chairperson Lim Chae-jung (former Speaker of the National Assembly) and Chairperson of the Executive Committee Hong Hyun-Ik (Chancellor of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy) as well as four chairpersons and twelve members of the Subcommittees on Future Planning, on Politics and Diplomacy, on Economy and Commerce, and on Society and Culture.


Considering the current COVID-19 situation, the ceremony was held in a hybrid online and offline format.


2. The Committee for Future-Oriented Development of Korea-China Relations aims for experts of the two countries to draw up and suggest a roadmap on the direction of the development of relations between Korea and China as they mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations in 2022. Korea and China agreed in principle to launch the Committee in the Korea-China Foreign Ministers’ meeting on November 26, 2020.



3. Foreign Minister Chung, in his opening remarks, asked the members of the Committee to review the achievements and experiences in Korea-China relations over the past 30 years and gather their wisdom to draw up a blueprint for future-oriented development of Korea-China relations based on their expertise in each field.


° In addition, Foreign Minister Chung expressed his hope that the Committee will successfully carry out its tasks and contribute to healthy and mature development of the Korea-China strategic cooperative partnership through close cooperation between experts of both countries.

On August 24, the Committee for Future-Oriented Development of Korea-China Relations will be officially launched, and its inaugural plenary meeting will be held.
