1. The Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) will hold the 2021 IFANS Conference on Global Affairs on the theme “Breaking the Nuclear Impasse: North Korea Nuclear Problem and Peace in Asia” on July 28-29.
2. The 2021 IFANS Conference on Global Affairs will look back over the past four years and reflect on many variables and calculations of regional countries that have affected the dynamics of the nuclear negotiations. Eminent scholars and experts will put their heads together to explore innovative ways to break the current deadlock and advance the peace process on the Korean peninsula.
3. On July 28, the
Conference will kick off with opening remarks by Foreign Minister of the
Republic of Korea CHUNG Eui-yong. Each session will be organized around a
particular theme. The topic of Session I is “Denuclearization of the Korean
Peninsula and Peace in Asia,” and the theme for Session II is “Exploring the
Road Ahead.” The two-day conference will be virtually open to the public and be
streamed live on the KNDA’s YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/user/KNDALIVE).
° Session I will feature a roundtable discussion with KNDA Chancellor KIM Joon
Hyung as moderator. President of the Center for Strategic and International
Studies John J. HAMRE, Former US Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Mark W.
LIPPERT, Professor Nobukatsu KANEHARA of Doshisha University, Professor of
Peking University JIA Qingguo, and KNDAProfessor
HWANG Ildo will share their perspectives on the North Korean nuclear issue and
explore ways to advance peace in Northeast Asia.
° Session II will feature a roundtable discussion with Chairman of East Asia Institute HA Young-Sun as moderator. Participants - Former Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs of the Republic of Korea WI Sunglac, KNDA Professor JUN Bong-geun, ROKSpecial Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs NOH Kyu-duk, President of the Korea Institute for National Unification KOH Yu-hwan, President of the Sejong Institute LEE Sang Hyun - will share valuable insights and a broad array of perspectives on policy options for dealing with the North Korean nuclear issue and ways to deepen cooperation among regional players.
4. The IFANS Conference on Global Affairs aims to map out Korea’s way forward in crafting its foreign policy and contributing to the international community. Since its inception in 2010, the conference has brought fresh thinking and deep expertise to the most pressing foreign policy and national security challenges.
