Deputy Minister for Political Affairs Has Virtual Meeting with SOM Leader of Singapore

1. Deputy Minister for Political Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Yeo Seung-bae had a virtual meeting with Second Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) leader of Singapore Stanley Loh on July 22nd.

 

o This meeting was held to exchange views with ASEAN SOM leaders in advance of the ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ Meetings that are scheduled for August 3rd-6th.

* The virtual meeting with SOM leader of Brunei Darussalam, this year’s ASEAN Chair, was held on July 5th.

 

2. The two sides agreed to enhance cooperation for the success of ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ and Summit meetings this year.

 

o In particular, both sides agreed to take this year’s ROK-ASEAN Summit as an opportunity to take stock of the progress made in cooperation between the ROK and ASEAN through the New Southern Policy (NSP) and to reaffirm commitment to further enhance cooperation.

 

3. The two sides also exchanged views on ways of enhancing bilateral relations. In particular, both sides agreed to work together to ensure smooth progress in substantial cooperation plans between the two countries in areas such as infrastructure, connectivity, and people-to-people exchanges as discussed during Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong's visit to Singapore in June.

 

4. Deputy Minister Yeo and Second Permanent Secretary Loh exchanged views on regional and global issues including the Korean Peninsula as well as the situation in Myanmar.

 

o In particular, Deputy Minister Yeo appreciated Singapore and ASEAN’s continuous support for the ROK's endeavors to make progress towards complete denuclearization and the establishment of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula and asked for their continued active support and cooperation.
