Eighth ROK-U.S.-Japan Vice Foreign Ministerial Meeting

1. Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Choi Jong Kun held the eighth ROK-U.S.-Japan Vice Foreign Ministerial Meeting with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy R. Sherman and Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Takeo Mori in Tokyo, Japan, on July 21, and exchanged opinions on topics of common interest including Korean Peninsula issues and regional and global affairs.

 

2. Vice Minister Choi, Deputy Secretary Sherman, and Vice Minister Mori recognized the importance of dialogue and engagement to achieve complete denuclearization and establishment of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula, and agreed to continue diplomatic efforts to make progress.

 

3. Vice Minister Choi, Deputy Secretary Sherman, and Vice Minister Mori shared the view that peace, stability, and prosperity of the region is in the common interest of the three countries, and reaffirmed their commitment to the trilateral cooperation to further engage with the region. They also shared their deep concern over the situation in Myanmar, and committed to work together toward a prompt resolution of the matter.

 

o Furthermore, they agreed to continue to seek future-oriented and mutually beneficial cooperation beyond the region to address global issues such as climate change and global health, based on the values the three countries share.

 

4. Vice Minister Choi, Deputy Secretary Sherman, and Vice Minister Mori reaffirmed the usefulness of the ROK-U.S.-Japan trilateral cooperation, and agreed to meet on a regular basis to continue close communication.
