Minister of Foreign Affairs Pays Courtesy Call on President of Indonesia Joko Widodo

1. Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong paid a courtesy call on President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo on June 25 in Jakarta, and they exchanged views on Korea-Indonesia relations, support for Korean companies’ activities, and cooperation on COVID-19 response.

 

2. Foreign Minister Chung expressed his satisfaction that the two countries have maintained their relations at the highest level based on deep trust and friendship between their two leaders since the establishment of the Special Strategic Partnership on the occasion of President Moon Jae-in’s visit to Indonesia in 2017.

 

3. Foreign Minister Chung also mentioned that Korea and Indonesia have continuously expanded win-win economic cooperation, even amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. He hoped that the two countries will lay the foundation for increasing bilateral cooperation even further in various fields including culture, public health, and infrastructure, as well as trade and investment, particularly through the prompt entry into force of the Korea-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (KI-CEPA).

 

o Foreign Minister Chung noted that the Indonesian government’s active efforts to improve the country’s investment environment have enabled Korean companies to invest more in Indonesia and requested Indonesia’s continuous interest and assistance for facilitating Korean companies’ activities in such fields as electric cars and batteries.

 

4. President Jokowi mentioned that Indonesia is actively pushing ahead with its plans to enhance its investment environment and attaches great importance to investment cooperation in the green economy. He expressed his appreciation for Korean companies’ growing investment in electric cars and the electric car ecosystem in Indonesia.

 

5. Foreign Minister Chung noted with appreciation that Korea and Indonesia have been increasing cooperation in the fields of defense and the defense industry based on deep trust between the two countries and hoped that mutually beneficial projects such as the joint development project of KF-21/IF-X will be implemented with great success.

 

6. Foreign Minister Chung mentioned that the two countries have been working closely together since the outbreak of COVID-19 and that Korea will step up its cooperation with Indonesia and the international community for an equitable access to vaccines, the development and production of vaccines, and the provision of COVID-19 relief supplies.

 

o President Jokowi appreciated that the Korean government decided to provide additional COVID-19 relief supplies to Indonesia and expressed hope that the two countries will work together more closely on COVID-19 response.

 

7. Foreign Minister Chung expressed appreciation for President Jokowi’s unwavering support for the Korean government’s efforts to make progress on the Korean Peninsula Peace Process.

 

o President Jokowi emphasized that the achievement of peace on the Korean Peninsula is also important to Indonesia and expressed his strong support for the New Southern Policy. He also hoped that the two countries will work closely to promote substantial cooperation within the framework of the New Southern Policy.
