Outcome of Korea-Singapore Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

1. Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong had a meeting and breakfast with Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Singapore Vivian Balakrishnan on June 24, and they exchanged views on bilateral relations as well as on regional and global affairs.

 

2. Foreign Minister Chung noted with appreciation the ever-increasing cooperation between Korea and Singapore, a key partner for Korea’s New Southern Policy, and asked for Singapore’s continued support in producing tangible results in the cooperation between the two countries, particularly in achieving the seven initiatives* of the New Southern Policy Plus.

  o The two foreign ministers shared the view that equitable access to vaccines is pivotal for overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic and agreed to work closely on bolstering multilateral cooperation in areas of health and disease control, including through the COVAX AMC.

 

  o The two ministers agreed to maintain close communication for the early resumption of the Reciprocal Green Lane (Fast Lane)* arrangements between the two countries and to continue discussing ways to expand people-to-people exchanges, such as travel bubble and mutual recognition of certificates of vaccination, taking into account the vaccination rates of both countries.

3. The two foreign ministers appreciated the active participation of Korean companies in Singapore’s flagship infrastructure projects even amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and agreed to further enhance cooperation in future industries, such as financial technology and startups.

 

  ※ Singapore is Korea’s No.1 partner in Asia for infrastructure construction. From 1965 to the first half of 2021, Korean companies have won contracts for 393 projects worth $45.6 billion in Singapore.

 

4. The two foreign ministers shared the view that complete denuclearization and the establishment of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula is vital for sustaining regional order and stability, and agreed to maintain close communication in implementing the Korean Peninsula peace process.

 

5. The two foreign ministers expressed deep concern over the humanitarian crisis caused by the latest developments in Myanmar and shared the view that the five-point consensus reached at the ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting on April 24 should be implemented in a prompt manner. The two ministers agreed to work together in ensuring that ASEAN continues to play a central role in peacefully addressing the current situation in Myanmar.
