Ten Days Ahead of 2021 P4G Seoul Summit, Green Future Week (May 24-29) Set to Begin

Various Breakout Sessions to Discuss P4G Summit Theme “Inclusive Green Recovery Towards Carbon Neutrality”

□ The Korean government will host the 2021 P4G Seoul Summit on May 30 (Sun) and May 31 (Mon). Accordingly, the government has designated May 24 to May 29 as the ‘Green Future Week’ and will hold 15 Breakout Sessions until the end of the Summit.


ㅇ The Breakout Sessions include Special Sessions to be held during the Green Future Week and five Thematic Sessions scheduled for the Summit period. The 2021 P4G Seoul Summit will officially begin with the Green Future Week Opening on May 24.


ㅇ The Breakout Sessions are organized by ministries and organizations responsible for respective session themes, including the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Rural Affairs. All Sessions are either pre-recorded or broadcast live at the DDP (Dongdaemun Design Plaza) in Seoul, Korea.


□ Officially marking the beginning of the 2021 P4G Seoul Summit, the Green Future Week Opening will feature congratulatory remarks by the National Assembly Speaker and opening remarks by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Environment.


 ㅇ ‘The Voice of the Future Urging Climate Action’ is a video of the next generation calling for immediate climate action for a greener future.

 ㅇ ‘Our Promise for Climate Action’ will be joined by representatives of the future generation, civil society, and businesses wishing for the success of the Green Future Week. The participants will jointly make the promise that they will indeed start their action on green journey.


□ The themes of the Green Future Sessions comprehensively reflect the ongoing global dialogue on climate and environment, as well as Korea’s recent policy interests.

ㅇ Panelists and speakers from governments, international organizations, businesses, civil societies, and academic circles with expertise in various climate fields will join each Breakout Session to engage in a two-hour in-depth discussion under the overarching Summit agenda of ‘Inclusive Green Recovery towards Carbon Neutrality.’

□ In addition, the Thematic Sessions scheduled for May 31 (Mon), the second day of the 2021 P4G Seoul Summit, will cover the five SDG sectors closely interlinked to the P4G initiative. The Thematic Sessions were also held at the inaugural P4G Copenhagen Summit in 2018.


ㅇ In each Thematic Session, high-level officials and specialists with field expertise and global recognition representing  governments, businesses, civil societies, and international organizations will participate to discuss the five P4G sectors. They will deliver keynote presentations and engage in panel discussions for 2 hours and 30 minutes per session. All Thematic Sessions will also include a 40-minute-long P4G Hub-led Session.


ㅇ The Thematic Sessions will provide the general public with an opportunity to raise their understanding on the current global dialogue on each topic.

□ A video summary outlining the major outcome of the Thematic Sessions will be reported to the 2021 P4G Seoul Summit Leaders’ Dialogue. After the Summit, detailed outcome of all Thematic Sessions will be provided by the hosting ministries.


□ In consideration of the uncertainties regarding COVID-19, all programs including the Green Future Week Opening will be held mostly virtually.


 ㅇ All programs of the Summit including the Green Future Week Opening will be available at the 2021 P4G Seoul Summit Virtual Venue, which anyone can easily access via the official Summit website.

□ Executive Director of the 2021 P4G Seoul Summit Preparatory Office Yoo Yeon-chul said, “The P4G Summit is a unique and inclusive platform since it not only invites governments but also businesses and civil society partners to respond to climate change and achieve the SDGs.”


 ㅇ He added, “Also, through the 15 Breakout Sessions, the Summit is expected to discuss how we can start climate action to achieve ‘Inclusive Green Recovery toward Carbon Neutrality.’”
