Outcome of Telephone Conversation between Foreign Ministers of Korea and Australia

1. Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong spoke over the phone with Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia Marise Payne on March 12, and had a broad exchange of views on Korea-Australia relations, cooperation in the multilateral arena, and regional situations.

 

2. The two sides noted with appreciation that Korea-Australia relations have advanced in a range of areas since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1961, and agreed that with this year marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two countries would further expand and deepen their friendly and cooperative relations, while communicating more closely even amid the COVID-19 situation.

 

o In particular, the ministers agreed on the importance of pursuing high level exchanges, such as the scheduled 2+2 foreign affairs and defence ministerial meeting, as the COVID-19 situation improves.

 

3. The two sides shared the view that the two countries, as long-standing friends, would communicate actively on regional and global affairs and continue to strengthen cooperation in the multilateral arena.

 

o The two sides agreed to continue close communication through various channels to contribute to discussions at this year’s G7 Summit.

 

o In addition, regarding the situation in Myanmar, the two sides agreed to work closely together in ensuring an immediate release of those detained, an end to violence against citizens, and a peaceful resolution of the situation in adherence with a lawful and democratic process.

 

4. Foreign Minister Chung commended Australia’s contribution to the efforts to establish peace on the Korean Peninsula, and asked for Australia’s continued support and cooperation.
