Consultation to Take Place with Ocean Infinity Firm for Review and Assessment of Search Operations for Stellar Daisy

1. Search operations for Stellar Daisy ship were carried out from February 14 until 23, 2019, at its accident site. The results of the search operations are as follows:  Some hull debris was found within the one-kilometer radius from where distress signals had been sent off, the voyage data recorder (VDR) capsule was found and recovered, what was presumed to be part of human skeleton as well as orange-colored objects that were assumed to be pieces of workwear was found; and samples of hull debris were collected.

 

° Seabed Constructor, a deep-sea search vessel of the Ocean Infinity firm, which was commissioned to carry out the search operations, left the accident site on February 23, Korea Standard Time, and will make a call at the Port of Montevideo, Uruguay, on March 1.

 

° After the remains of what was presumed to be part of human skeleton were found on February 21, KST, the government of the Republic of Korea asked the Ocean Infinity firm to recover them. However, the firm notified the ROK government that as the recovery work required special skills and equipment, it could not perform the work, and that further consultations are needed.

 

2. The government will dispatch government officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, as well as civilian experts, and families of the missing to Montevideo, Uruguay, in order to review and assess the search operations as well as consultations with Ocean Infinity on further search efforts and other possible next steps.

 

3. On the occasion of the review and evaluation meeting to be held in Montevideo, the government aims to thoroughly verify whether Ocean Infinity has fully complied with the task instructions and the terms of the contract. Should there be anything falling short, the government will strongly urge the firm to make necessary improvements. The two sides will also discuss the possibility of conducting search operations for the recovery of human remains.
