1. On November 1, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Hyun met with State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Norway Marianne Hagen, who was on a visit to the Republic of Korea. In the meeting, the two sides discussed the ROK-Norway relations, substantive cooperation, the current situation on the Korean Peninsula, and cooperation on the international stage.

State Secretary Hagen was on a visit to the ROK for the Busan International Seafood & Fisheries EXPO 2018 (October 31-November 2) and a seminar on environment-friendly vessels (Busan, November 2).

2. Vice Minister Cho, taking note of the steady progress in the friendly and cooperative ties between the ROK and Norway since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1959, suggested that the two countries, which will mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2019, boost high-level exchanges and substantive cooperation across the board.

° State Secretary Hagen, sharing the Vice Minister’s view, stated that Norway is much interested in working with the ROK and hoped to step up cooperation at the bilateral and multilateral levels, including in traditional areas of cooperation, such as maritime affairs and fisheries.

3. Vice Minister Cho shared with the State Secretary the outcome of the third inter-Korean summit held from September 18 to 20 and other recent developments in the situation on the Korean Peninsula, asking Norway to remain attentive to and supportive of the efforts to achieve denuclearization and establish a permanent peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.

° State Secretary Hagen, commending the ROK government’s efforts to seek progress in the inter-Korean relations, stated that Norway will work closely with the ROK government toward the establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula.

4. The Vice Minister and the State Secretary discussed major international issues, including the free trade order, climate change and development cooperation, agreeing to continuously and increasingly work together in these areas.

° Vice Minister Cho asked for Norway’s attention to and cooperation on the ROK’s efforts to establish a world fisheries university under the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO); and extended appreciation to the country for its contribution to the development of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) as one of its founding member states.

The ROK, in cooperation with FAO, is seeking to establish a world fisheries university in Busan with the aim to help developing countries develop human resources in the fisheries sector, and thereby to contribute to the building of a sustainable fisheries industry and to enhance the ROK’s standing in the international community.

The GGGI is a Seoul-based international organization founded in October 2012 pursuant to the Agreement on the Establishment of the GGGI. The organization, currently composed of 30 member states, is conducting projects designed to help developing countries build low-carbon green economies.
