1. On June 4, Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha held a telephone conference with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of the US. Over the phone, the two top diplomats exchanged views on the outcome of the courtesy call on President Donald Trump on June 1 by Vice Chairman Kim Yong-chol of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of (North) Korea and other recent progress in the lead-up to the forthcoming US-North Korea summit talks; and discussed in depth possible next steps to take in order to make a success of the summit meeting in Singapore.
° The Minister and the Secretary agreed to hold close bilateral consultations until and even after the US-North Korea summit talks to continuously seek ways to achieve a complete denuclearization and a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.
2. The telephone conversation between the Minister and the Secretary took place to follow up on their previous one held on June 1 on the heels of the high-level US-North Korea meeting in New York on May 31. Going forward, the Republic of Korea and the United States plan to further step up communication and cooperation with each other at various levels toward the success of the US-North Korea summit meeting.
