1. On February 20, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was elected President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) by consensus of the 28 GGGI member states.

* Since 2016, the GGGI has held regular meetings of its Assembly and Council together, with the President of the Assembly doubling as the Chair of the Council.

The first and second Presidents/Chairs of the GGGI were former Prime Minister Rasmussen of Denmark (October 2012-October 2014) and former President Yudhoyono of Indonesia (January 2015-December 2016), respectively.

° The President/Chair, who serves extendable two-year terms, chairs in his capacity as a private member meetings of the Assembly and the Council of the GGGI; attends as a GGGI representative major international conferences, including the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and the sessions of the UN General Assembly and the UN Environment Assembly; and supports the GGGI and its activities.

The 17-seat Council of the GGGI includes five private members.

2. The GGGI, the first international organization the Republic of Korea spearheaded the establishment of in 2012, is headquartered in Seoul with regional offices in 20-odd countries, through which the GGGI, in cooperation with the governments of those countries, is supporting their efforts to respond to climate change and achieve a sustainable development.

The GGGI, an international organization founded in October 2012 pursuant to “the agreement on the establishment of the GGGI,” is currently conducting in 25 countries 33 projects designed to support the adoption of a low-carbon, green economy.

3. During his service as UN Secretary-General, Mr. Ban helped to lay the groundwork for a new climate regime by taking on an intermediary role in the conclusion of the Paris Agreement, and to set the sustainable development goals (SDGs), thereby making climate change and sustainable development the top priorities of the international community.

4. During his service as GGGI President/Chair, former UN Secretary-General Ban, who has the aforementioned career background, is expected to contribute to a more stable development of the six-year-old GGGI, including by enhancing its standing and increasing its leverage in the international community.

5. The ROK government, by playing the role as the biggest donor to the GGGI and one of its permanent members as well as rendering assistance to former Secretary-General Ban to see the best possible effect from his service as GGGI President/Chair, plans to support the GGGI efforts to grow into a well-established international organization.
