1. The first meeting of the Republic of Korea-China joint committee for cooperation on climate change will take place in Busan on June 23. The head delegates to the meeting from the ROK and China will be Ambassador for Climate Change Choi Jai-chul of the Foreign Ministry, and chief climate negotiator and Bureau Chief for the Development of Climate Change Su Wei of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), respectively.

° The Joint Committee meeting will mark the first of its kind to come pursuant to the bilateral “Agreement for Cooperation on Climate Change,” concluded in January 2015. It will cover the two countries’ respective policies and cooperation projects more comprehensively than the annual bilateral dialogue on climate change, which has taken place over the past three years since 2013.

2. In their Joint Committee meeting, the ROK and China will share with each other their respective policies regarding climate change and look into possible cooperation projects in such areas as the adaptation to climate change and climate technology.

° In particular, the ROK will share with China its policies regarding energy and climate technology as well as its system for reporting on and verifying information on greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, the country will propose to China that the two countries conduct projects aimed at building the capacity to adapt to climate change and sharing information on carbon capture and storage.

3. In conjunction with the Joint Committee meeting, an ROK-China roundtable will be held in Busan on June 22 to enhance mutual understanding on their emissions trading systems (ETSs).

° At the roundtable, relevant experts will discuss in depth the ETSs currently in place in the two countries, including the allocation of greenhouse gas emission allowances, greenhouse gas offsets, and systems for reporting on and verifying relevant information.
