1. The Foreign Ministry, together with East Timor, will host the sixth annual meeting of the Global Network of R2P (Responsibility to Protect) Focal Points in Seoul from June 20 to 22.

2. The first meeting of the Global Network of R2P Focal Points to take place in Asia will cover in depth the role of the R2P Focal Points in the implementation of the R2P; and ways to build national, regional and global capabilities for the prevention of felonies.

° The government of the Republic of Korea, the first Asian country to have appointed an R2P Focal Point, has been taking an active part in the R2P discussions at the UN and will continue efforts to build broader international support for the work to implement the R2P.

3. In its report in 2014, the Commission of Inquiry (COI) on human rights in the DPRK, pointing out that North Korea’s violations of human rights constitute crimes against humanity, raised the need for the North Korean government to implement the Responsibility to Protect its people. The ROK government expects the forthcoming meeting to serve as an opportunity to draw keener attention from the international community to the human rights situation in North Korea.
