Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs to Visit the EU and China

1. Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs Kim Hong-kyun will visit Beijing on June 8 and 9 for a Republic of Korea-China meeting of head delegates to the Six-Party Talks with Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Affairs Wu Dawei.

2. In the forthcoming meeting, the two sides will exchange views on the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the developments in North Korea’s foreign relations in the wake of the seventh Congress of the Workers’ Party of North Korea. With three months having passed since the adoption of the latest UN Security Council resolution on North Korea, the ROK and China will discuss ways to fully coordinate on North Korea and its nuclear issue, including in thoroughly implementing UN Security Council resolutions and deterring North Korea from launching any further provocations.

3. Prior to his visit to China, Special Representative Kim will visit Brussels, Belgium, on June 6 and 7. During the visit, he will meet with Secretary-General Alain Le Roy of the European External Action Service and discuss with him ways to step up the ROK-EU strategic coordination in addressing North Korea and its nuclear issues, including through joint efforts to enforce sanctions and put pressure on North Korea and through the EU’s unilateral sanctions on the country.
