Outcome of an ROK-Mekong SOM

1. A Republic of Korea-Mekong Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) took place in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on May 26 and 27, bringing together delegates from the ROK and the five countries in the Lower Mekong Subregion. The ROK’s head delegate to the meeting was Director-General for South Asian and Pacific Affairs Kang Young-hoon of the Foreign Ministry.

2. In the SOM, the ROK and the countries in the Lower Mekong Subregion reviewed the progress in cooperation projects in the Mekong region and discussed the way forward for cooperation among them.

3. The ROK and the Mekong countries agreed to actively implement the various cooperation projects discussed at SOM and report on their outcomes at the sixth ROK-Mekong foreign ministerial meeting, which will take place in late July 2016.

4. The delegates from the six countries also agreed to hold the fourth ROK-Mekong business forum in Yangon, Myanmar, on June 30 and seek closer cooperation among small- and medium-sized enterprises of the countries.
