Foreign Ministry Holds the Launching Ceremony of the Second Batch of the Energy and Green Growth Supporters

1. The launching ceremony of the second batch of the “Energy and Green Growth Supporters,” presided over by second Vice Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul, was held in the international conference hall of the Foreign Ministry on August 13. The Foreign Ministry selected 102 undergraduates and graduates from 48 domestic and foreign universities to form the supporters’ group. The Ministry will run a variety of programs with the group over the next three months.

* The first batch of the Energy and Green Growth Supporters consisted of 100 members and conducted various activities last year.

2. The students will enter an education camp located in Yonsei University’s International Campus in Songdo this afternoon. They will listen to lectures on energy and green growth and visit sites related to the energy industry.

o Lecturers invited to the camp, including a senior researcher from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the world’s largest international organization on new and renewable energy, and the Secretary-General of the Organizing Committee of the World Energy Congress (WEC) Daegu 2013, will share with the students their up-to-date knowledge and international experience in energy and environment. On the last day, the students will visit the Korea Gas Corporation’s LNG facilities and Gas Science Museum to gain first-hand experience in the LNG supply system.

3. The Foreign Minister’s letters of appointment as the Energy and Green Growth Supporters will be issued to students who complete the entire programs of the camp and submit essays or policy proposals by October. The very best student selected through screening process will be given the Foreign Minister’s Award, as well as opportunities to participate in an internship at an international organization on energy and environment or to attend an international meeting. Furthermore, the best students will be provided with opportunities to observe the second International Shale Gas Conference and the third International Energy Cooperation Symposium and to work as supporters of the WEC Daegu 2013.

4. The aforementioned programs are expected to provide undergraduates and graduates who want to work for international organizations on energy and environment with a good opportunity to accumulate knowledge and first-hand experience in major global issues, such as energy, climate change and green growth.

5. The Foreign Ministry will continue to support youngsters who will play an active part in the international community as global energy and green growth leaders.
