UN Commission of Inquiry on North Korea to Visit the ROK

 1. The UN Human Rights Council’s Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the human rights situation in North Korea, headed by former High Court Judge Michael Kirby of Australia, will visit the Republic of Korea from August 18 through 27 to collect information on the human rights situation in North Korea.

2. The UN COI on North Korea will pay a courtesy call on the Prime Minister and then meet with the Foreign Minister on August 19. The group will also hold meetings with relevant officials of the Unification Ministry, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea and related civic organizations. In addition, it will hold public hearings to be participated by North Korean defectors, families of abductees to North Korea and experts in the human rights situation in North Korea.

3. The ROK government co-sponsored the UN Human Rights Council resolution on the establishment of the UN COI on North Korea. It will provide active support to the UN COI to make its visit to the ROK fruitful.
