1. The UN Security Council North Korea Sanctions Committee (1718 Sanctions Committee) added Green Pine Associated Corporation, Amroggang Development Banking Corp. and Korea Heungjin Trading Company to the existing list of eight sanctions targets on May 2.

° The aforementioned companies are key North Korean entities involved in the illicit nuclear and missile programs of North Korea, having taken over many of the activities of or worked closely with those blacklisted by the Security Council in 2009, including the Korea Mining Development Trading Corporation and Tanchon Commercial Bank.

2. The North Korea Sanctions Committee recently updated the list of sensitive nuclear and ballistic missile technology prohibited for transfer to or from North Korea. In addition, the Committee has adopted a concrete work plan for the year, which calls for stronger promotional activities to enhance the awareness of the UN member states on the sanctions against North Korea and to encourage their implementation.

3. The North Korea Sanctions Committee expanded the list of the sanctions targets in accordance with the instruction of the UN Security Council Presidential Statement to devise measures to strengthen the enforcement of the sanctions against North Korea. With the addition, the Security Council’s sanctions mechanism has been tightened overall. As the entities were selected through careful consultations among the ROK, the US, Japan and other friendly countries, the list is expected to enhance the effectiveness of the sanctions against North Korea.

4. Detailed information on the entities, existing and added, on the list will be posted on the North Korea Sanctions Committee website at www.un.org/sc/committees/1718.
