Holding of the Seminar on the 「Global Economic Crisis and Future Direction of the Multilateral Trade System」

1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade will co-host an open seminar on the “Global Economic Crisis and Future Direction of the Multilateral Trade System” with the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) on November 18 at the Shilla Hotel (reception hall) in Seoul.
2. At the seminar will be examined the outstanding issues such as the DDA negotiations for the 7th WTO Ministerial Conference Meeting, which will be held from November 30 to December 2 in Geneva, Switzerland. Furthermore, in depth discussions will be made on the roles and challenges of the WTO, including the ways to recover from the global economic crisis and strengthen the multilateral trade system.
o Specific themes of the seminar: (1) agenda for the 7th WTO Ministerial Conference Meeting and ways to strengthen the multilateral trade system, (2) prospects and ways to deal with the DDA negotiations on agriculture and fisheries and (3) role of the WTO in the recovery of the global economic crisis
※ At the 7th WTO Ministerial Conference Meeting will be discussed the roles and challenges of the WTO for the mid- to long-term development of the multilateral trade system and the examination state of the play present situation and the ways for improvement progress of the DDA negotiations for the mid- to long-term development of the multilateral trade system
3. In particular, this seminar will provide an opportunity for constructive discussions that generate suggestions for various policies to be made among the public, private and academic sectors on ways to overcome the global economic crisis by strengthening the multilateral trade system and on ways to guarantee Korea’s trade benefits in the DDA negotiations.
