Minister Visits the U.S. (Talks with the National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley)

1. Minister Yu Myung-hwan met with the U.S. National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley on March 27 and had 
a constructive exchange of views on the major pending issues between the two countries. The two sides 
also had a preliminary discussion for coordinating the upcoming Korea-U.S. summit slated for April 19.

2. Minister Yu and Adviser Hadley agreed to further develop the Korea-U.S. alliance to increase mutual 
interests based on common values and understanding. The two sides agreed to exert every effort for the 
success of the Korea-U.S. summit so that it is looked upon as a milestone for developing the bilateral 
alliance in a strategic and future-oriented way.

3. Both sides agreed to continue concerted efforts for the peaceful resolution of the North Korean nuclear 
issue. They also had in-depth discussions on the situation on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia, as 
well as on ways to promote regional cooperation.

4. The two sides also agreed to continue exert efforts for the early ratification of the Korea-U.S. Free Trade 
Agreement at the administrative level, and to work in collaboration for Korea’s entry to the U.S. Visa Waiver 
Program (VWP) within this year.

5. Adviser Hadley highly appreciated Korea’s efforts to aid the reconstruction of Afghanistan as well as 
dispatch troops to Iraq. In return, Minister Yu noted the efforts and contributions of the U.S. to bring peace 
and stability in the Middle East.
