1. The Government of the Republic of Korea was elected as a member of the International Civil Aviation
Organization (ICAO) Council for a three-year term at the 33rd Session of ICAO in Montreal, Canada, on
October 2, 2001.
2. The ROK government was elected as member of the council as a candidate for Part III (regional
representation of 12 States), receiving 109 out of 156 votes in total, along with the Islamic Republic of
Pakistan. The ROK's membership of the ICAO Council is expected to uplift the international confidence and
status of Korean civil aviation, and furthermore increase the ROK's influence on the process of policy review
and decision-making by ICAO.
3. As a member of the ICAO Council, the ROK government will actively participate in the ICAO Council, which
reviews and decides various international standards and regulations in the area of civil aviation, and thereby
contribute to the development of international civil aviation in a safe and orderly manner. The ROK
government will also take this opportunity to develop Korea's civil aviation industry befitting international
standards.
